The centerpiece to Sony’s PS4 “Greatness Awaits” campaign pits two gamers against each other singing Lou Reed’s haunting ballad “Perfect Day” as they battle through three game worlds re-created in live-action. The film helped launch Sony’s next generation PS4 game console and has over 16 million YouTube views to date.

To announce the arrival of the long-awaited next generation PS4 console a

collaboration was born with the late music icon, and former Velvet Underground

front man, Lou Reed for a unique re-rendering of his cult classic “Perfect Day”.

The song’s hauntingly optimistic lyrics, slow-building intensity and dark

undertones lent just the right amount of sadistic irony to the on screen

destruction and spoke genuinely to the happy yet dark state of mind of the film’s

adversaries who are seen having the time of their lives destroying each other in

various re-created game worlds. The untrained singing voices of the competing

gamers—who are maniacally serenading each other throughout the spot— were

by design to deliver the same dry honesty, sincerity and perverse joy represented

in the original recording.

Being the perfectionist that he was, the music great personally entered the

studio to re-record the track to ensure that the integrity of the song was not compromised and—less selfishly—that the edited version of the song would synch perfectly with picture.

The recording was one of Lou Reed’s last before his untimely death and we hope

it serves as a tribute to him by inspiring a new generation listeners and fans of

his important and thoughtful music.
