Overview

Background

As a producer of sustainably farmed fish, Regal Springs brought a larger challenge: To support communities and environmental welfare projects.

Regal Springs has identified a unique opportunity in Yoro, Honduras, where it rains fish due to tornadoes near the coastline. Every fish that falls from the sky was registered with a protected designation of origin. In partnership with Yoro's residents, it created a sustainable ecosystem that benefits both the local community and the environment.

Now, more residents have access to economic opportunities, improving their livelihoods and contributing to the advancement of Responsible Consumption and Production. The use of banana peel packaging further enhances sustainability by reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.

Objectives:

Highlight the importance of responsible consumption and production of fish.

Promote sustainable farming practices and environmentally friendly packaging.

Create economic opportunities for the local community while also protecting the environment.

Encourage the community to make a profit.

Describe the cultural / social / political climate and the significance of the work within this context

Regal Springs is the world’s #1 producer of sustainably-farmed tilapia. We are eco-friendly, supporting the welfare of the fish, the environment, and local communities.

Regal Springs' Heaven Fish initiative is significant in Honduras' cultural, social, and economic context. In the small community of Yoro, Honduras, over 60% of its population lives on less than $1 a day. Unemployment hovers at around 40%, in large part due to a simple lack of economic opportunity.

The program offers the people of Yoro a sustainable source of income and contributes to the region's economic growth and stability while tackling civil liberties issues such as poverty and income disparity. Heaven Fish also benefits the environment by encouraging sustainable fishing practices. Furthermore,  it fosters inclusivity and collaboration with the Yoro community and serves as an example of how businesses may be socially responsible while being successful, encouraging a feeling of fairness and equity.

Describe the creative idea

The Rain of Fish is a rare meteorological event that happens every year in Yoro. Nobody’s sure why or how, it’s been happening for more than 100 years. There are many theories out there as to how it happens, but for the townsfolk, it’s quite simply a miracle. The event is so important that the town celebrates a festival in its honor every May.

So, to boost Yoro’s economy, we turned that miracle into an opportunity.

Every fish from this miracle will be registered with a protected designation of origin, increasing their value and giving Yoro’s population exclusive distribution rights.

Finally, Regal Springs will collect the fish and add them to its product line, turning them into an exquisite product available worldwide, as a rare ingredient for high-end seafood cuisine

Describe the strategy

Regal Springs has likely conducted market research to identify potential target audiences and understand their preferences for sustainable and ethically sourced practices. The data collected on the local community in Yoro, such as an average daily income level as low as 1$ USD, and the lack of formal employment opportunities reached close to 79% of the cases.

The approach is focused on emphasizing the unique and exclusive nature of the product, while also promoting the sustainable and ethical practices behind it. This appeals to high-end consumers, locals, and restaurants who value rare and high-quality ingredients, as well as those who prioritize sustainability and social responsibility in their purchasing decisions.

Regal Springs' collaborations with renowned chefs, local markets, and sustainable food organizations serve to increase the visibility and credibility of the Heaven Fish brand and highlight its commitment to sustainable practices. By leveraging social media and our e-commerce.

Describe the execution

Heaven Fish transformed a natural occurrence in Yoro, Honduras into a sustainable economic opportunity for the local community. In partnership with the people of Yoro, Regal Springs, gathers and registers every fish that falls from the sky with a protected designation of origin and provides the community with exclusive distribution rights.

This has resulted in a new source of income for the locals, potentially increasing their daily wage by up to 400%. The campaign has positioned Heaven Fish as a rare and original ingredient in high-end cuisine and local markets, using eco-friendly packaging made from banana peels. The brand has expanded beyond Yoro, with chefs, restaurants, and food enthusiasts from all over already having tasted heaven. This rare occurrence was transformed into a profitable and sustainable business while benefitting the local community.

Describe the results / impact

The impact Heaven Fish initiative has been providing a new and sustainable source of income for the local community in Yoro, Honduras, Regal Springs has helped to reduce massive consumption and increase economic stability.

The business impact of the initiative has been positive, leading to increased sales and revenue for Regal Springs, as well as potentially increasing the daily wage of Yoro residents by up to 400%.

The scalability of the Heaven Fish is limited by the natural occurrence of the fish falling from the sky, but the success of the Heaven Fish brand has shown sustainable, and distribution efforts so there's a taste of heaven outside Yoro and even outside Honduras.

The initiative has also had a positive impact on behavior change and action, promoting inclusivity.

While the initiative may not have directly led to legislation change or regulations, it has raised awareness of sustainable business practices.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

Yoro, Honduras, was a little-known town until lately. Due to the tornado activity close to the beach, fish fall from the sky in this particular location on Earth. From a local perspective, it is a miracle, but for scientists, it is a natural event.

Locals have been aware of the "Lluvia de Peces," or "Rain of Fish," for at least the last 100 years. It is believed that this incident was a divine occurrence that brought wealth and riches to the neighborhood.

The focus on sustainable packaging and economic growth through ethical fishing techniques is especially pertinent to the local context because Honduras has been attempting to promote sustainable development and protect its natural resources.
