BriefExplanation

Diego has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 44. As he sits in his chair, we can hear his thoughts and feelings.

The camera tracks in and we can see Diego ageing subtly. His hair recedes, his face starts to become thin and wrinkled.

As he gets older, problems caused by poorly-managed diabetes begin to take hold. At 33 secs, Diego’s right eye goes red, a sign of diabetic retinopathy. His skin deteriorates.

At 53 secs, when he’s almost 70 years old, we see that Diego had to endure a shocking consequence of diabetes – amputation.

At 01:06, the film rewinds to the point at which therapy intensification could have made a difference to Diego’s life.

Before the supers appear, Diego feels defeated. What else can he do?

We finish by asking doctors to consider intensive therapy to change their patients’ future.

ClientBriefOrObjective

The art direction played an important part in telling Diego's story with as much force as possible.

Type 2 diabetes is a slow, often invisible disease. Complications resulting from ineffectively managed disease can hit patients and their doctors suddenly and with impact.

The art direction of the film was intrinsic to that idea. The clothes belonged to the actor and the chair was from a second-hand shop. It was important to make our props (minimal as they are) believable and authentic - that they looked like they were part of his life and witnesses to his journey.

The ageing process was incredibly subtle, to the point that it almost seems like nothing’s happening until it’s too late. Very much like the effects of diabetes.

We intentionally kept the set very minimal to create a stark and timeless environment.

EntrySummary

Type 2 diabetes is a global epidemic. Even so, few doctors truly appreciate the long-term impact inadequately-treated diabetes can have on patients’ health. This is despite international guidelines recommending earlier treatment intensification with a second agent if patients do not reach their HbA1c target after 3 months.

If left untreated, or inadequately treated, type 2 diabetes can result in increased risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, blindness, amputation or even death from peripheral vascular disease.

Our film was created to help doctors recognise a new, younger patient type, and inspire them to change their prescribing habits by intensifying treatment as soon as possible – the earlier they do this, the less likely these patients are to experience serious diabetes-related consequences during their lives.
