Overview

Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

It has been confirmed that smog can be conducive to viruses or bacteria attacking our respiratory systems. In the context of the current world pandemic, we need healthy lungs and clean air more than ever before. Hence the information provided by the Mobile Air Check is of great importance for all of us. What's more, it's the most accurate, updated in real-time, mobile smog map in the world.

Background

In Warsaw (population 1.8M), there were only five official points measuring level of smog. Residents of many districts had to rely on readings that often came from meters placed many kilometres away from their place of residence. Some districts had no air quality measurement.

We equipped the fleet of emission-free electric cars innogyGO! with sensors measuring air quality. Now, measurements taken from air sensors in innogyGo! cars enable data collection even from districts where there were no stationary sensors before. 25 cars deliver up to 108 thousand readings per day. We have created the most precise smog map in the world.

The information provided by the Mobile Air Check helps Varsovians make daily decisions: where to go for a walk, or whether they should go to work by bike. It's important also due to the current world pandemic, because we need healthy lungs and clean air more than ever.

Describe the idea

Warsaw has an alarming level of smog. Yet, until the start of the campaign, there were only five points measuring the level of smog there. Residents of many districts and streets had to rely on readings that often came from meters placed many kilometers away from their place of residence. The Praga-Pólnoc district had no air quality measurement. To change that, we equipped popular electric cars available via the car-sharing platform with mobile air quality sensors and created the most accurate, updated in real-time, mobile smog map in the world.

What were the key dates in the development process?

5 March 2020 - Execution date

Describe the innovation / technology

To get information from sensors you need to check the smog map on any mobile device. 25 cars provide 75 readings per minute. Colors of cars and roads on the map show how big the level of smog is in the exact place. Red means high, green - low. You can also get information about the concentration of harmful dust: PM1, PM 2.5, PM10, current temperature, atmospheric pressure, and air humidity. Data collected by cars is available live on an instantly generated map at airly.eu and in a mobile app for iOS and Android.

Describe the expectations / outcome

The daily number of sessions on airly.eu/mapasmogowa reached up to 3 thousand (data from 29 March, the day with the worst air quality since the launch of the action). 60 articles were written about the campaign, with a total reach of over 1.8 million hits. The estimated media equivalent exceeded 213 thousand PLN. Once again, the activities of others were willingly published by portals dealing with the environment and responsible business, including CSR Report and Green News. The innovative action was mentioned by popular news titles such as Forbes Polska, Wyborcza, Onet, Wirtualna Polska, Super Express, or K MAG. Moreover, the action was also reported by automotive-related websites, including Wirtualna Polska Autokult, Moto Polska or Motocaina. Jan Piechocinski, MP, Wojciech Pietrusiewicz (iMagazine) and Norbert Cala (Techlove) also tweeted about the other parties.
