Background

A fact wants to be exposed: domestic violence has always been lurking among us. China has laudable laws and institutions against domestic violence, but most victims choose to remain silent for an outdated yet binding conception: Don't wash your dirty linen in public.

Describe the cultural/social/political climate in your region and the significance of your campaign within this context

Domestic violence is happening in 30% of Chinese families and the victims are usually women – and their children. However, as the result of the outdated yet binding conception of “Don't wash your dirty linen in public”, most sufferers choose to remain silent while only 6.6% will call the police after being mistreated. To change this uncalled-for situation, QQ decides to initiate the “No More Silence” campaign which allows users to put convincingly vivid bruises on their selfies and post the synthesized images on social media. In this way, we hope to intimidate the abusers and encourage the victims to stand up for themselves.

Describe the creative idea

QQ AI, with its facial recognition capacities to track facial features, allows users to add convincing bruised effects on selfies which we wish will be posted on social media as a call for attention to the issue and victims of domestic violence, intimidating the abusers and consolidating those who are suffering. No more silence, since it serves only to conceal violence.

Describe the strategy

QQ, a social platform of 807 million users, initiates No More Silence as an attempt to encourage and support the victims of domestic violence in China, who more often than not remain silent, to speak out. With a new feature of QQ camera, users are able to add convincing bruised effects on selfies which we wish will be posted on social media as a call for attention to the issue and victims of domestic violence, intimidating the abusers and consolidating those who are suffering. No more silence, since it serves only to conceal violence.

Describe the results/impact

After the project was launched, a number of celebrities volunteered to lend their hands and the impressions quickly reached 100 million. Now domestic violence is increasinly a speakable and discussable issue instead of a taboo as it used to be. Domestic violence is not something to fear but to expose.
