CampaignDescription

In FX’s series Legion, reality is unreliable. Fans are constantly led to doubt the main character’s perception and question the reality of what they’re seeing. The Legion Mixed Reality Experience drops audiences into David Haller’s unstable narrative, embracing immersive theatre and AR to make them question their own reality.

The sensory experience mixed reality by using interactive objects and animation with live actors and physical environments. The MR elements let participants explore their own version of reality through the eyes of David Haller, the schizophrenic lead character who believes he may be a mutant.

Execution

The sensory experience was created in collaboration with global leaders in VFX, featuring an unprecedented hardware and software pipeline that allowed users to live out scenes from the show’s first season in David Haller’s hospital room. The capabilities of Microsoft Hololens allowed for a unique scan of the room for each participant, allowing for CG objects to appear in front of the user as they would in a physical environment.

Once the AR environment was solidified and integrated into the headsets, real-life actors memorized the location of each virtual object in the room, in preparation to perform for each participant without breaking their sense of presence. A custom set was fabricated to incorporate series elements and draw fans into the experience.

Outcome

The premiere of Sessions sold-out in minutes, with stand-by lines circling around multiple city blocks by the installation. Fans and press were delighted by the experience, which garnered over 320 million earned media impressions.

Relevancy

Sessions is a truly unique experience that transports participants into the physical and emotional spaces of the FX television show Legion. The experience’s use of Mixed Reality, innovative technology, and theater gives fans and newcomers unprecedented access, allowing them to feel truly immersed into the show's world in the role of David Haller (Dan Stevens) as his powers are put to the test.

Solution

An overall experience was designed which integrated high-ended AR technology with immersive theatrical performance by actors. A unique hardware and software pipeline was created including a custom developed state machine, that drove the narrative forward for consumers less familiar with the headset's technology.

To reach our biggest fan base, the experience was hosted at San Diego Comic Con. The finished product was an unprecedented mixed reality experience that combined live-action theatrics with augmented reality allowing for CG objects to appear in front of the user as they would in a physical environment.

Synopsis

In support of the first season of Legion, FX sought to bring fans into the distorted world of David Haller's mind, complete with mutant powers, in a first-of-its kind activation utilizing Microsoft Hololens. FX’s aim was to create the most talked about, mind-melting, magical mixed reality activation in existence.
