Our society is very prejudiced against older people when it comes to sex. We don’t show older people as sexual beings in advertising, or in culture.
The reality is that people of all ethnicities, sexualities and preferences enjoy sex, intimacy and connection well beyond their fifties: in the UK in 2016, 60% of men and 37% of women over 65 were still sexually active, and at least 1 in 4 men and 1 in 10 women aged 85+ were still sexually active. (The International Longevity Centre) And research has shown that positive intimate sexual relations are key aspect of health and wellbeing at all ages. Conversations around sex and older people need to be normalised to counter ageist stereotypes and misconceptions, and promote better health, happiness and joy throughout life.
