Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

Nobody Is Normal is the film that highlights the simple, yet often unspoken truth that we all feel like we don’t “fit in” one way or another.

The film captures the feeling of not fitting in - personifying insecurity as a monstrous creature that we keep hidden inside. The story follows a creature disguising itself in a human skin suit in order to appear like a “normal” teenager and fit in at school. However, they soon discover that things at their school aren’t quite as “normal” as they might seem. In fact, everyone seems to be hiding something inside.

The beautifully crafted stop-motion animation creates a surreal world for our story to unfold.

Complementing the visuals is the iconic Radiohead song “Creep”, which provides a melancholy ode to the outcast.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

Our hero characters were brought to life in metaphorical ways that align with British descriptions of the range of topics covered.

Anxiety depicted as a tightly knotted ball, depression a looming cloud, body image a blob-like figure, and our LGBTQ+ character depicted as a brightly coloured rainbow figure.

Tell the jury about the choice of music track.

Bringing our story to life needed an epic track. With no dialogue and an emotional journey that explored the inner turmoil of teenagers who don’t fit in, the soundtrack had to do a lot of heavy lifting.

We had the perfect song in mind. An anthem to outcasts. A record that would transcend generations to be timeless, swerving patronising attempts to be ‘cool’ to our young audience and inevitably missing the mark. A song that could embody our story like no other.

The iconic ‘Creep’ by Radiohead. Notoriously reluctant to allow their music to be used for commercial purposes, they personally broke their own rule and granted the charity Childline permission to use their most famous song because they liked the film.

The result? An incredibly moving piece of storytelling with a powerful message, brought to life by a song that’s been introduced to the next generation of outcasts.
