Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
Nobody Is Normal is the film that highlights the simple, yet often unspoken truth that we all feel like we don’t “fit in” one way or another.
The film captures the feeling of not fitting in - personifying insecurity as a monstrous creature that we keep hidden inside. The story follows a creature disguising itself in a human skin suit in order to appear like a “normal” teenager and fit in at school. However, they soon discover that things at their school aren’t quite as “normal” as they might seem. In fact, everyone seems to be hiding something inside.
The beautifully crafted stop-motion animation creates a surreal world for our story to unfold.
Complementing the visuals is the iconic Radiohead song “Creep”, which provides a melancholy ode to the outcast.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
Our hero characters were brought to life in metaphorical ways that align with British descriptions of the range of topics covered.
Anxiety depicted as a tightly knotted ball, depression a looming cloud, body image a blob-like figure, and our LGBTQ+ character depicted as a brightly coloured rainbow figure.
Tell the jury the animation used and summarise any relevant challenges or techniques.
We fully embraced stop-motion animation to bring our surreal story to life. The crafty, tactile feel perfectly capturing the balance of oddity and charm required to realise the creative concept, as well as achieve our goal of being thumb-scroll-stopping for our young audience online. As a film with no dialogue, which chiefly focuses on how our characters feel inside, it was integral that we could capture subtle facial expressions to convey emotions - so to achieve this, we applied 2D graphics to faces that could seamlessly blend into our handmade world.
The characters, props and sets were created from assorted found materials and crafted on kitchen tables during lockdown. The attention to detail is outstanding, with each frame bursting with easter eggs and beautiful miniatures.
The end result is an expertly-crafted film on a minimal budget, which brings to life our emotional story in a way no other medium
