Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
The film, which served as the nucleus of the campaign, shows an intimate and human look at a year spent in isolation. Crowd-sourced photography captures portraits of togetherness in a year that was otherwise lonely. Woven between are messages of connection sent on Facebook’s platforms (facebook, Instagram and What’s App.) The soundtrack is the song “It’s Been a Year” by British singer-songwriter Tom Rosenthal, licensed especially for this project.
All the leaves blow down again
I've had time to understand what you said to me
And I've run out of dreams
Run out of maps to read
Run out of you
I would give you an Oscar for the movie you made with me
The one no one is going to see
It's been a year
Oh what a year
And I gotta tell ya
It's the closest I've ever been
To the heart of everything
It's been a year
Cultural / Context information for the jury
The Facebook Company's mission is to bring the world closer together. Over the pandemic year, this took on new meaning. “It’s Been a Year” is a campaign developed for the Facebook Company (which includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and others) to reach audiences during Mental Health Awareness Month 2021. Our idea was to talk about the power of mental health check-ins, many of which have occurred organically via the Facebook family of apps during the pandemic year. Beginning with a moving :60, and then telling deeper stories through social media, the project celebrated the connections we made that helped us and sometimes surprised us.
“It’s been a year.” That was the line we wrote for the campaign for The Facebook Company for Mental Health Awareness Month, in May 2021. Because it had been exactly one year since the pandemic had begun, and everything had changed.
Tell the jury about the choice of music track.
We had the idea for the campaign sorted. But "It's Been a Year" only really only came alive once we found Tom Rosenthal’s gorgeous track of the same name. The melody, the lyrics, the good and the bad… it wasn’t written about this particular year, the first year of the pandemic, but it could have been. We knew we needed to use it.
Lyrics:
All the leaves blow down again
I've had time to understand what you said to me
And I've run out of dreams
Run out of maps to read
Run out of you
I would give you an Oscar for the movie you made with me
The one no one is going to see
It's been a year
Oh what a year
And I gotta tell ya
It's the closest I've ever been
To the heart of everything
It's been a year
