Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The film captures an artistic interpretation between two world-class tap dancers, Kamira Samuel and Lee Howard. They express themselves without the use of language, with dance as a dialogue and denim as their uniform. Presenting a magical fusion of dance, cinematography, soundtrack and camera tricks, the film is made up of three ‘acts’. The story opens on the two lead dancers performing separately but echoing each other in a balletic call and response. They tap a sort of morse code before meeting and dancing together, then later merging with a troupe of tap dancers - who on closer inspection are doubles of the dancers themselves. The edgy choreography subverts traditional tap dance, incorporating body claps with conventional tap. Combined with the contemporary styling of the G-Star RAW Hardcore Denim collection, it perfectly showcases the craftsmanship and tailoring of the clothes.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

G-Star RAW is a Dutch denim brand that wants to democratize denim.

It believes that there is no limit to what denim can do, and it has already proved this by creating denim sculptures, boats, bikes, collabs and denim crossovers. On top of all that, G-Star is famous for working with music, culture and dance, so this video featuring tap dancing was a logical fit.

It’s just another example of the fact that G-Star RAW can make everything look cool by adding denim.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the edit. Do not name the editor.

Tap sounds form a conversation between two people who don’t have to be able to see each other. Finding the perfect combination of dance, music and buildup and turning that into a unified piece of content was the challenge in the editing stage. The rhythm (tap sounds and dance movements) was the basis of the editing. The most difficult part was forming a conversation from the start while having the dancers tap in separate locations. To match these scenes, sounds and fluid movements, we worked closely with the choreographer. The film starts slowly to create tension and quickly builds up towards the ultimate finale where the two dancers meet.
