Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
The Translator is the story of a man who excels at helping others communicate but lacks every social skill imaginable in his personal life. In fact, his most meaningful relationship is with his pet Parrot, White.
His latest project, being the on-set translator for a biscuit commercial, triggers a set of circumstances that will take Jonathan on a journey of self-discovery that culminates ultimately in him learning about what makes us truly human: the need to love and be loved.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
Thailand is known to be a pretty open society. As such, many Chinese nationals have moved there for work, in an attempt to escape the more rigid nature of their culture. Our story drew upon this insight, and that of the fact that singlehood and the pursuit of love in China is always a hot topic, to create relevance for the Chinese audience.
Tell the jury about the casting process.
The film casted actors from Thailand and China. The film's protagonist, who plays Jonathan Huang, was cast in his first acting role. We felt he had the perfect look to play the role of a quiet, unassuming man, sometimes awkward with others. We also needed an actor who could speak both Thai and Chinese, and as a result, ended up casting someone who's actual day job was that of a mediator, making him the perfect choice for the role of The Translator.
