Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

Based on the true story of a Chipotle farmer, "A Future Begins" champions a family farm's remarkable revival. The stop-motion animated film begins by depicting a farming family sending their child off to college. While the family battles to keep their farm intact, ultimately putting their land up for sale, the child, now living in the city, struggles to discover his calling. After a moment passes, when his true destiny becomes clear, the child returns with his family to save the family farm by introducing new technology and sustainable growing techniques, which are inspired by current Chipotle suppliers and partners.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

Blues, Jazz, Rock, and Hip-Hop may have uniquely American influences, but they are global.

Country Music has not entirely translated globally, but it's America's #1 genre. (Chipotle serves Mexican food but in a very American style.)

And with Chipotle's growth to 3,000 restaurants in America, Chipotle has committed more to family farms than all other brands combined. As a result, Chipotle changed the industry–and the fortunes of thousands of farmers in America and now the U.K.–by sourcing from family farms through its promise to Cultivate A Better World.

So, choosing a global mega-hit like "Fix You," from a band committed to sustainable farming, with lyrics perfectly suited to the storytelling, then having next-gen Country superstar, Grammy winner, Farm Aid performer, and Time Woman of the Year, Kacey Musgraves, reimagine it, then launching the film and song on Thanksgiving (an American holiday celebrating a bountiful harvest) had uniquely powerful cultural resonance.

Tell the jury about the choice of music track.

"Back to the Start" had two impossible asks:

Asking Coldplay to do something they’d never before done – provide a track for a brand.

Asking Country legend and Farm Aid founder, Willie Nelson, to reimagine that track.

We couldn’t believe they said yes then, and now we had to do it again?!?

We did not assume Coldplay would say yes, making this only the second time the band worked with a brand.

So we tried hundreds of tracks. But it was always "Fix You." An aging farmer’s son returns from a life in the city to save the family farm? "...lights will guide me home...and I will try…."

We made our case. We shared the film. We shared our idea to have next-generation Country superstar, Farm Aid performer, and collaborator of both Willie Nelson and Chris Martin, Kacey Musgraves, reimagine “Fix You.”

We held our breath.

Coldplay said, "yes."

Whew.
