We enter the room just as she’s trying for her fifth episode in a row and watch as she struggles against sleep. Each time she dozes off, her tablet hits her in the face – but still she persists. Eventually she falls asleep with the tablet on her face as the show plays on. An all-seeing narrator commentates the action for us.

We peer around the doorway into a darkened bedroom in a house somewhere in suburban Australia. A middle aged woman bathes in the glow of a tablet while her husband snoozes beside her.

V/O: And welcome back to Karen’s room.

We see the tablet is playing HBO’s Veep. Karen is fighting to stay awake.

V/O: If you’re just joining us we’re four episodes deep into HBO’s Veep and it looks we’re trying for a fifth…

Close up on Karen’s face. She’s losing the battle with sleep. The tablet hovers precariously above her face, then whacks her on the nose.

V/O: First signs of fatigue there.

She wakes up, bewildered. In the confusion, the tablet hits her a second time.

V/O: There’s the double tap, this isn’t looking good.

She looks sheepishly over at her husband to check he didn’t see. His foot twitches, but he sleeps on. Karen resets herself. The sound of Veep from the tablet seems to taunt her.

V/O: Now let’s see how she brings this one home.

Pause for a beat as she sinks away again. One heavy blink.

V/O: That’s once…

Two blinks. She can’t possibly hold on.

VO: twice...

On the third blink the tablet drops.

V/O: Three times a lady. Goodnight Karen.

It rests gently on her face as she finally gives way to sleep. We creep slowly out of the room.
