This spot focuses on Karen, a middle-aged woman who loves to binge on her favourite Foxtel programs. Tonight, it’s Wentworth.

We join Karen five hours into her marathon session right at the moment she finds her groove in the couch. The entire commercial centres on her slow descent into a deep lean, getting almost horizontal because she’s so wrapped up in the action of her show. By the end, there is no couch – there is only Karen. An all-seeing narrator commentates the action for us.

Wentworth is the popular reboot of cult Australian TV series Prisoner that first ran on TV here from 1979-86. Both shows centre around a women’s correctional facility located in Victoria.

Both shows also feature an iconic character known as ‘The Freak’, a nasty prison warden who makes an appearance in this commercial. Wentworth currently airs on Foxtel in Australia.

We open on a middle-aged woman, Karen, in her lounge room. She’s so engrossed in a ‘Wentworth’ binge session she’s sunk right into her couch.

V/O: And hello again to Karen. 5 hours into this Wentworth marathon

Cut to the TV, we see Wentworth Prison Warden ‘The Freak’ grab her victim’s throat, interrupting our VO.

V/O: - oop, there’s the Freak -

Back to Karen still transfixed, mouth ajar.

V/O: and she is not giving up.

She begins to sink further into the couch.

V/O: Just sliding a little deeper there.

The fork on an abandoned plate next to her starts to slide, like a small moon pulled into a planet’s orbit.

V/O: Deeper.

We survey the couch from above as the couch begins to groan. We go inside the couch itself to reveal the distressed springs getting a workout.

V/O: She’s going to struggle to get out of this one.

Cut back to her face, all chins now, almost sliding out of frame. She is oblivious to all but her show.

V/O: But she doesn’t seem to care.

Cut back to the screen. The Freak’s victim’s legs dangle as the life drains out of her.

V/O: ‘Cause you’re a bad girl,

Cut back to Karen, so deep she’s almost out of frame. She smiles at the character’s demise.

V/O: aren’t you Karen?

We leave Karen in her nearly horizontal pose.
