Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

An everyday couple, filled with excitement and anticipation of growing their family, discovers the news of their pregnancy. As the baby bump grows, we see the couple prepare for their baby. From ultrasound appointments to decorating the nursery, anticipation builds. We suddenly see the mother in pain, and we watch her internalize and downplay the pain she's experiencing. In the delivery room, the doctors call for an operating room. Moments later, we see the new baby crying, but hear a flatline tone as the doctor informs the new father and grandmother that their wife and daughter haven't survived. Narrator Lena Waithe tells the viewer that birthing deaths are up amongst women of color, and shares ways to prevent such deaths. We re-live the narrative and witness the mom-to-be advocate for herself and receive the support and care she needs—the couple swoons over their new baby after a healthy delivery.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

MTV Networks partnered with Lena Waithe, an American screenwriter, producer, actress, and activist, and her production company, Hillman Grad Productions, to create the Save Our Moms PSA. Partnering with Waithe engaged MTV and VH1’s vastly diverse audiences by adding recognizable stardom to the social film.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the cinematography.

The film's cinematography is intimate and grounded, featuring balanced and centrally shot close-ups and mid-shots to focus on facial details. Emotion pours out onto the screen as we witness the characters' inner thoughts. Our perspective is right there with the protagonist as the shots roll by fast and track across a variety of relatable home and everyday settings. Natural lighting throughout adds to the realism factor of the film. Quick cuts take us through many scenes smoothly as time passes, showing just how fast pregnancy-related complications can escalate. The use of narration brings the film from the climax to the falling action. We then see a flashback that presents an alternate pregnancy, where the mom-to-be advocates for herself and has a healthy delivery. Shot compositions provide rich depth and telegraph the raw agony of suffering contrasted with the joy of connection with others.
