ClientBriefOrObjective

- Brief and Strategic Objectives:

Never before in history has TV produced so much good content. With so much stuff to watch, how can SKY, a satellite broadcast service, help people to find the shows on TV that they are really going to enjoy?

SKY knows that the way people consume content is changing dramatically with the internet and believes that to stay relevant the brand needs to create solutions to be seen less as a distributor and more like a curator of entertainment.

- The Creative Idea:

We created Sky Tip, a browser extension that gives you suggestions on what to watch on TV based on what you are browsing on the internet in real-time. Your interests on the web become your personalized TV program schedule.

Sky Tip is a solution that combines a friendly digital tool (browser extension), the use of different types of data-bases, an algorithm of artificial intelligence and real-time information to be able to deliver personal suggestions through a simple and intuitive interface.

Execution

Sky Tip is an innovative solution that shows how a brand can be present through non-traditional ways in the digital world. The use of data in a clever way was crucial to engage and improve the consumer experience with the brand.

It became a relevant service, free and exclusive for more than 5MM SKY clientes. It’s a powerful tool for branding and have an important role in customer loyalty.

It helpe improves the ARPU (average revenue per user) suggesting pay-per-view programs and package upgrades in a much more efficient way.

With this tool, SKY put 145 TV channels plus more than 3.5k hours of daily programs following their clients.

We’ve created a smarter way to watch TV.

Implementation

- How It Works

1. From the SKY website or the Chrome Web Store users can easily install the extension on their browser and then sync it to their SKY account.

2. At each site they browse, it uses sophisticated algorithms to track keywords and searches for matches in SKY program schedule in real time.

3. Then users can record or buy programs directly from their browser to watch later on TV at home.

- Strategic technique(s)

In the backend there are two distinct crawlers that run every 6 hours.

The first one, is responsible for grabbing the SKY program schedule from the next seven days that is provided by an Electronic Program Guide (EPG). The connection is made though and API sponsored by SKY and save it into a NoSQL Database (MongoDB).

The second one, is responsible for searching additional information enhancing the data-structure using IMDB, OMDb, TMDb APIs (ex: complete synopsis, pictures, genre, etc.).

After gathering and enriching the content, in an incremental way. The algorithm does its magic and creates a metadata structure based on keywords and other information for each program (ex: actors and director names, title, most relevant words in the synopsis, etc.). Then it adapts the information and creates a lite weight response (JSON) that will be consumed by the extension. To improve the response and processing, all the calculations runs asynchronously.

The Chrome extension is responsible for reading all the textual content from each browser tab opened and search for the specific combination of keywords that will indicate matches with SKY program schedule.

Outcome

Once the extension has the recommendation(s), it is able to bind it to the unique Sky costumer information, provided by the login on the Sky API. This ensures that it will only offer suggestions that belong to the subscription plan that each customers have.

The extension finally notifies the user that found a suggestion and build the recommendation in the interface in real-time. All this processing happens on the browser background and don’t disturbs the user navigation. The algorithm runs on JavaScript and entirely in the client-side and uses the cached response from the backend to provide the recommendation. It requests every 6 hours an updated JSON.

From there users can record or buy programs directly from the extension. The request is made directly to the SKY satellite with the program and the customer ID. The satellite then sends the request directly to the box at the customer's home.
