Cultural / Context information for the jury

"Sound Tour" draws deeply upon many Japanese cultural traditions.

The Spotify Code designs came from centuries-long techniques and cherished cultural craft. The music composed for these locations, while modern, deeply embraces the rich, local musical traditions of Japan as well.

For the Lantern Code, which was displayed along the beautiful Chaya Gai street, where historic teahouses have resided for over 200 years, a lantern craftsman worked with a young digital apprentice to create this modernized regional art form.

In Houshima-machi, a contemporary ikebana artist produced a Code made purely of Sakura (cherry blossoms), very dear to the Japanese, and loved for their vibrant, but short-lived beauty.

And in Noto, a seaside town where squid is as much a part of the local culture as the sea itself, a local fisherman worked closely with his beloved squid to create a which Code produced music in sync with its surroundings.

Spotify Codes have already existed as a way of instantly triggering music, helping music lovers to quickly access and share content.

This campaign takes this existing Code and integrates the use of local native elements and materials, in crafting the specific pieces.

For the Lantern Code, a local lantern craftsman, employing the traditional technique of past centuries, was commissioned to work with a young digital team to create the Spotify logo as a lantern along with the 23 others that would make the entire Code.

The Sakura (cherry blossom) Code, was produced by a contemporary Ikebana artist, schooled in the traditions of Japanese flower arranging, with a particular focus on the sakura.

And the squid fisherman, who created the Squid Code, has worked with the sea creature for two decades, though he has definitely created a work never before imagined with this "Sound Tour" squid project.
