Cultural / Context information for the jury

In the U.S, consolidation and pressures to cut costs in the egg industry have led to the widespread mistreatment of farm animals. To cover it up, brands use misleading imagery and nice-sounding labels, like “cage-free,” that mask what’s really happening on their farms. For instance, while “cage-free” hens aren’t kept in cages, they’re still kept in over-crowded coops and never see the light of day.

Vital Farms thinks that’s a bunch of bullsh*t. They believe in giving people an honest look at how their hens are treated—free of any bullsh*t.

So, when it came time to photograph their latest campaign, we turned to the most honest photographers we could find: their hens.

We built the world’s first hen-operated camera and let the hens of Vital Farms capture hundreds of stunning, and oftentimes strange, photos of the wide-open pastures they call home.

Tell the jury about the photography. Do not name the photographer.

The images depict an actual hens-eye-view of life on a Vital Farms farm, using raw, black and white photography.

They capture both the beauty of the hens’ lives but also the drama and rugged imperfection. Some of the images almost feel composed given the striking postures of the hens and the rolling landscapes. While others feel like misfires, with hens hovering over the lens as if it were a worm about to be pecked from the soil.

Together, the photos encapsulate how Vital Farms believes hens should be treated while proving that honesty and beauty are one in the same.
