In 2008, Vimeo launched their Staff Picks channel virtually without acknowledgement. 10 years on, that designation has grown to more than 12,000 videos. Vimeo wanted to celebrate this tin anniversary at SXSW, and invited us get Creative. The result? The Decade, a three-day multiplex-esque activation paying tribute to a curated selection of Staff Picks. From a custom marquee to commissioned film posters and catered concessions, we looked for every opportunity to turn downtown Austin’s Native Hostel into a Staff Picks easter egg hunt. In addition to setting up the space to screen 100+ short films, we transformed eight rooms into deeper experiences built around cult hits like, “Hi Stranger,” and “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared.” If that weren’t enough, theater-goers could also attend keynote speeches from the likes of Danny DeVito, Carlos Lopez Estrada, and end the day soaking in the sound of Kawehi, Dan Deacon, and more.
