Overview

Why is this work relevant for Glass: The Award for Change?

Worsening crises are making it difficult for women and intersex persons worldwide to advance in many areas. The World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2022 states that it will likely take 132 years to close the global gender gap.

With our concept of the first Arabic all-gender font, we want to make our contribution to more equality and justice in the Arab world. In Arabic the masculine case is used by default in terms of writing. This excludes all other genders.

Background

Almost 60% of university students in the United Arab Emirates are female. But women barely make up 10% of the workforce. The problem is language: In Arabic the masculine case is used by default in terms of writing particularly in the world of work. But especially in a traditional society such as the UAE, women just don’t apply to job ads directed at men.

The same applies for people who do not want to assign themselves to the gender system "male" or "female". This leads to workforce shortage and therefore to serious economic damage.

Describe the cultural / social / political climate around gender representation and the significance of the work within this context

If you want to bring about cultural change, you have to deal with prejudice and resistance from conservative forces.

At first, we met with incomprehension and rejection. But gradually the feedback from institutions and companies became more and more positive.

Against all odds, UN Women Arab States has taken the first step toward a gender-neutral Arabic written language within its four-year Generation Equality plan.

Describe the creative idea.

At a time when calls for gender equality and equal opportunities are being heard around the world, we devote ourselves to a possible solution for the Arab region in this regard. Our contribution: the All-Genders Font, the first gender-neutral Arabic font with a new Arabic sign which makes it possible to include everyone (m/f/x).
