Overview

Why is this work relevant for PR?

“The Call” has been featured on some of the world’s most respected news outlets such as on the front page of AMNY, Forbes and For(bes) The Culture, Vanity Fair, NYT and many more. Celebrities and influencers like Oscar nominated Actress Cynthia Errivo, Emmy Winning Director Alma Harel, Comedian Byron Bowers, Disney’s Global Creative Head and hundreds of people mobilized themselves and reproduced the idea through Instagram Stories and Radio. The Call initiative reached 7MM in the first day alone and garnered more the 15 million dollars in earned media over a 0$ media budget.

Background

In the US, 14% of medical residents think black skins are thicker than whites and research found blacks are forced to "code switch" to "sound white" for better outcomes. On top of that, blacks are 34% less likely to be prescribed proper pain medicine for conditions such as abdominal pain, black women die at 3-4x the rate of white women during childbirth, are 22% more likely to die from heart disease, and 71% more likely to die from cervical cancer. As shocking as these numbers may seem, to hear actual racial bias in a real-life medical emergency is truly heartbreaking.

Describe the creative idea

When it comes to getting proper healthcare, it shouldn’t matter how white or black your name and voice sound. But in 2020, it unfortunately still does. That’s why EmpowHer NY came forward to spark a conversation around unconscious bias in medicine. “The Call” exposes the reality that women of color all too often receive lesser treatment than their white counterparts by revealing just how different outcomes can be, even when patients present with the same symptoms.

Describe the PR strategy

We targeted 2 different audiences: healthcare workers through healthcare influencers like Doctor Fred Nicacio (over 300K followers on instagram) in order to get them to take the unconscious bias online training and celebrities and influencers to invite a wider audience to sign the petition to make the unconscious bias training mandatory in hospitals accross america.

Describe the PR execution

We've chosen to focus a big push on International Women's Day 2020, March 8th, where Celebrities and influencers like Oscar nominated Actress Cynthia Errivo, Emmy Winning Director Alma Harel, Comedian Byron Bowers, Disney’s Global Creative Head, 100 most influential African Descendent Ballerina Ingrid Silva and others posted the film on IG Stories. Hundreds of people mobilized themselves and reproduced the film through Instagram Stories. We've also created a radio version of the experiment and more than 10 radio stations ran it.

List the results

The Call initiative reached 7MM in the first day alone and garnered more the 15 million dollars in earned media over a 0$ media budget. More than 1000 unconscious bias training completed to date by healthcare workers, with the potential of saving countless lives.
