Overview

Background:

For the premiere of the 4th season of Stranger Things, Netflix and Flamin' Hot Mexico teamed up. The promotion was a combination between one of the greatest Netflix series, and one of Mexico’s favorite’s snacks: Flamin’ hot, which as Stranger Things has a unique, intense, seductive and mysterious flavor.

One of the biggest assets in this project, besides the brand and the hit series, was the fandom and we wanted to address that.

Describe the Impact:

The fandom around Stranger Things was big, so we wanted to create an idea worthy of them, including a very Mexican ingredient, such as the most loved wrestler of all times. In the 80s “El Santo” the Mexican wrestling legend fought against mommies, vampires and all kinds of monsters in almost 50 movies. So it made sense to face him against the only monster he didn't fight against: The Demogorgon.

We created posters inspired by the old "El Santo" movie posters, the fans went crazy:

-People ripped them off the walls on the points of sale in order to get one.

-Fake replicas of the posters were sold on the streets.

-People made a fake product collection with the posters printed on cups, towels, t-shirts etc.

-The posters were selected by the Society of Illustrators in New York and was part of its best of the best anual collection.

The 3 posters were published in The Adlatina Group Magazine in Mexico for their July/August 2022 Edition.

Translation. Provide a full English translation of any text.

The most Flamin' Hot wrestling ever.

The terrifying creature from the Upside Down, against the skillful Silver-masked man.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

"El Santo" is a larger-than-life wrestling icon and a movie star from the 80s, with almost 50 movies in which he fights against monsters like vampires, mummies, werewolves, etc. Each movie had a unique illustrated poster which people remembers with nostalgia and is now part of the Mexican pop culture.
