THE MILL , London / YOUNG DIRECTOR AWARD / 2014

BriefExplanation
Making a film with this creative scope presented a challenge in how to approach its execution. A concept like this felt like it needed more than one medium. Initially we wanted to do the majority of the creative using 3D, but ended up using live action, 2D, matt paintings, multiple location shoots and of course 3D.
The key objectives of this film where to arrest the viewer's attention, to plunge them into another world temporarily, and try to show them something they might not have seen before. I also didn’t want to be too literal with the narrative, somewhat leaving interpretation up to the audience.
ClientBriefOrObjective
To create a show opening title sequence for the annual Young Director’s Award event, allowing screen time for the event’s sponsors and embodying the YDA slogan ‘it’s in your bones’. The title sequence needed to communicate a connection between the young mind and direction.
Implementation
The idea in its simplest form is a ‘creative storm’ seen from the minds eye of a young director. Visually exploring that moment when a director is hit with a swarm of ideas, possibility and concept.
Outcome
The title sequence was a huge success on the evening of the ceremony and has gone on to win numerous awards.
