BriefExplanation
The men who pay Elena for her body don’t know she’s dying. With nothing left to lose and a family that needs her to live, she decides to leave Santo Domingo and follow Dr. Garcia of Montefiore (Academy Award Nominee Demián Bichir) on a near-impossible journey to New York.
EntrySummary
Corazón is a powerful, emotional and gorgeously rendered film based on a real-life doctor patient story. It was commissioned by Montefiore Healtcare systems as part of their campaign, "Give Your Heart," which encourages people to register to become organ donors.
Solution
This is a real-life story based on real people. For part of the production, the real Elena was on set. For the director, empathy was the key. This is human story about someone battling against all the odds as a complete outsider in every aspect, and within that journey it respected both the fragility & preciousness of human life. The goal was to not shy away from the horrors of our main characters life. So always trying to humanize the characters, especially the sex-workers swept up within what is a brutal & demoralizing world. Trying to spotlight the human being & their needs regardless of their social position or their immigration status - a similar approach in a way with our key doctors involved.
