BriefExplanation

This brand film takes the viewer back through 57 years of Coronation Street, recreating iconic scenes as they were filmed. The film travels through key moments from each decade of the soap’s life, showing not only the scenes themselves but also the craft involved in creating the moments we see being filmed.

The 60 second spot uses the production crew on the film set to lead us through recreated scenes ranging from Elsie and Dennis’ argument in their kitchen in the 60s, to Kylie’s stabbing scene in 2016. The film even finishes on Coronation Street’s current characters, showcasing future unaired footage of scenes to come.

End line: Coronation Street. Then, now & forever.

EntrySummary

Launched in December 1960, Coronation Street holds the Guinness World Record title for Britain's longest running TV programme. The soap’s characters, film set and storylines from over the years are national treasures to the British public.

The brand film ‘Coronation Street: Then, now and forever’ was created to drive love and reappraisal for the iconic show at a time when ITV added a 6th episode to an already busy weekly schedule.

Solution

To achieve the feeling of being taken on a journey through the decades of Coronation Street without each scene feeling too separate, a fluid cinematic style was adopted. Within this, each scene’s era was clearly signified through the art direction, set design, wardrobe, hair and make-up reflecting each period.

When casting actors to play the Coronation Street stars, a similar height, build and hair colour was important. However, to ensure that the viewer wouldn’t doubt that they were watching the real actors from the famous scenes, the actors’ faces were intentionally obscured. This was done in a way that felt natural through a combination of using the film crew and detailed set to guide the story, and showing the real scenes’ footage in the monitor screens to seamlessly complete the picture.

Some scenes were recreated on the Coronation Street set whilst classic sets were lovingly recreated at Shepperton Studios.
