Overview

Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

This Project completely redesigns the can of our beer. Without modifying much its appearance, it gives a use as never before had been done in the industry. In addition, it gives the possibility of change how the product is sold and consumed. This innovation could solve the problem of plastic and other wastes that ends up in the environment.

Background

With the arrival of a Corona brief that asked us to solve the problem of contamination in the packaging, we think of an idea that completely changes the play and assembles the cans together. To develop the perfect assembly, different types of packaging were investigated until we found the screw system, a simple but powerful union. From this point, with a limited budget, we get to market the Fit Pack, which “fits” the standards for beer sales.

Describe the idea

The observation was key in this piece, how to assemble the cans without using any other material than the simple cans? We think of glues, magnets, but that would not fulfill the brief or the expectations; then we observed how well they fit the cans together, and sometimes consumers stack them to buy more beers and take them to other places.

The brewing industry is strict, so creating a can of this magnitude should have the least possible modifications. The screw system is something simple and powerful, which easily adapts to our way of life and to consume these products.

What were the key dates in the development process?

The brief was received in September 2018, so the idea had to be worked on quickly.

The idea was presented to the client in October 2018.

The suppliers were obtained in January 2019 for the creation of the can.

In January of 2019 we received the first prototypes.

In January 2019, the thread model was developed.

Describe the innovation/technology

When we create this can, we think of a screw assembly that is on the top and another on the bottom, so that several cans can fit at the same time; this thread works like a screw and a nut. They were produced in aluminum so that it did not influence the taste of the beer.

We contacted a can manufacturer who could make that big change. We gave you the plans and sketches of the idea so you could create this solution in a physical way. We worked hand in hand until we could design a model that would screw without problems.

Describe the expectations/outcome

After the implementation of the "Fit Pack", the consumers and our industry itself discovered there's a new, simpler, and overall, cleaner way of packaging our product: beer.
