CampaignDescription
Pavegen turns people’s energy from movement to electrical energy.
How? By developing flooring technology that turns kinetic energy from footsteps into electricity. And then, taking this to places where it could help to meet people’s needs.
This technology enables people to directly engage with clean energy, to increase their understanding of sustainability issues, and also to move more.
For the #makethefuture project, Pavegen worked with Shell on projects to inspire underserved communities through sport and bright ideas on energy.
Execution
Pavegen converts people’s movement into off-grid electrical energy, data and rewards. As people step on the tiles, their weight cause the tiles to vertically displace. This kinetic movement is converted into electricity by electro-magnetic generators to power lighting, environmental sensors and signage.
Each tile is equipped with a wireless transmitter, to communicate real-time movement data analytics. Pavegen is able to connect to a range of mobile devices and building management systems. Its high durability and simple installation allow Pavegen to seamlessly integrate into any location, as an effective decentralised off-grid power and data solution.
We built a 200-tile football pitch in the Morro da Mineira favela, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As children played, the energy they generated was stored in batteries to help power the pitch floodlights after sunset. We then repeated the experience in Lagos, Nigeria and this was featured in Akon’s “Tell Me We’re OK” music video.
Outcome
The projects received media coverage in over 20 countries and were supported by Brazilian football legend, Pelé and world-famous singer Akon. The story has received over 100 million impressions and an increase of 500% positive content engagement for Shell.
Through its involvement with some of the world’s leading brands, Pavegen has been able to innovate and to develop new models of its technology. In May 2016, we launched our new product the V3. The triangular design creates a continuously articulated surface with no dead zones allowing us to capture energy from almost every footstep.
With over 150 permanent and temporary installations worldwide, including our recent arrays in Washington DC’s Dupont Circle, cities and brands are recognising the value of people power.
Relevancy
Pavegen is cutting-edge technology which converts footfall into electricity, data and compelling experiences. We harness people’s energy and imagination to improve lives and benefit the environment.
Synopsis
By 2050, the world will need double its current amount of energy supply.
We need to promote and power clean and better energy ideas.
And we need to do it together.
From climate change to rapidly expanding cities, we face complex environmental and social challenges. Our technology enables people to directly engage with clean energy, to increase their understanding of sustainability issues, and to connect purposefully with ideas and brands.
Cities are growing at a rate of 1.5 million people every week and by 2025, up to 40 cities will have a population greater than 10 million. Our technology connects and empowers communities across the globe, through the simple mechanic of footfall.
The average person takes three to four thousand steps a day but leading health organisations recommend 10,000. Our technology encourages people to be more active and rewards them for their effort.
