BriefExplanation
"The Rip" is an original poem we wrote about the god-like power of an ocean's tidal rip and the futility of a drowning man's attempts to resist its pull. We gave the poem to our filmmaker to interpret, with no added notes, and left him to realise our words for himself. He created a powerful visual representation of the eternal ocean as an old woman; unforgiving and vengeful, that climaxes in her reaching the shore as a child, ready to start the phase all over again.
EntrySummary
Like the BBC, the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) is a nationally funded broadcaster that has never ran advertising within its programming. So the challenge for us - when asked to promote its Arts Channel - was simple: how do you advertise a brand whose audience so clearly rejects advertising? The answer was to create art films.
ScriptInEnglish
Sense the bust lip of the bubbling fang
The envious suck of my watery jaw
Sprinkles of bone shell and powdery slate
The aquarium boom of anchor-deep canon
Drawing you into azure and wet tomb
Sinking the soak in your tentative flesh
Coaxing and pleading for broke-limb surrender
Arched, hopeful head
Cull the last of your light
Out through the back and buckled in blackout
The purchase and pull of my contrary tug
I am the final, soft slap of this day
I; the curt note that deafens out protest
Quiet as the temple;
post prayers and pure calling
monotonous backbeat
that bleeds out all birdsong
As cock-sure precise as a clockman's best day
Wiped and washed clean
on this canvas of life
