The video can be interpreted many ways. It opens on The Weeknd exiting an upside down vehicle with two women and as he walks away from the scene the car explodes. He then enters a mysterious house.

Execution

We shot the video in 8 hours. All the exterior shots were shot in under an hour. However everything was meticulously choreographed prior to shooting.

Outcome

After being posted to youtube many discussions started about the meaning of the creative and the characters, etc. Now less than a year later it has over 775 Million views and these discussions still continue.

Relevancy

It portrays Excellence in Music Videos. The video gave off a creative expression that not only triggered a massive wave of discussion and interpretation but also grew to be one of the most viewed videos in the last year.

Strategy

"Light was very important to executing the video properly. I wanted to set it at magic hour so it would be ambiguous if it takes place at sunrise or sunset. The cinematography was something that was integral to the success of the film. Visually it's very dark and I feel like it suits the feeling the music evokes."

Synopsis

"I was asked to create the first visual for The Weeknd's Grammy award winning album Beauty Behind The Madness. The Weeknd and his creative director loved my video for Ariel Pink's Dayzed Inn Daydreams which was why they approached me.

There was no real brief per se. The concept was generated as a collaboration between myself and The Weeknd.

The objective was simple: to make an outstanding, impactful, highly cinematic and visceral music video."
