Background

The 1500+ synthetic chemicals used in textile dyeing harm workers, wearers and the environment. While the industry slowly changes, greenwashing prevails.

Plants have long been used in dyeing, but without binding chemicals, color and health benefits fade quickly. This makes it unsuitable for mass production.

Please provide any cultural context that would help the jury understand any cultural, national or regional nuances applicable to this work e.g. local legislation, cultural norms, a national holiday or religious festival that may have a particular meaning.

AIZOME is a Japanese-German startup, named for the millenia-old Japanese plant-based dyeing method “aizome” that made use of water and natural indigo. Revered for its wound-healing properties in Samurai armor. Today, only five aizome masters remain in Tokushima, Japan.

The reinvention of a Japanese tradition was seen as unique and refreshing among the Japanese people, which resulted in a significant coverage from several Japanese media outlets. Since the decline of traditional aizome in the last few decades due to the rise of fast fashion, AIZOME ULTRA has been perceived as a hopeful comeback within the industry.

Strategy & Process

AIZOME ULTRA™ solves this. It begins with only water, medicinal plants, and cotton. But instead of synthetic chemicals, it uses a physical trick: ultrasound sets the plant particles in motion at a custom frequency of 52.5kHz, binding them to the fiber permanently. And with them, their color and health benefits.

Experience & Implementation

While eliminating chemicals in the process, AIZOME ULTRA™ now gives wearables healing properties: bedsheets that help heal wounds, t-shirts that can soothe and reduce stress or underwear that can ease menstrual pain.

AIZOME ULTRA™ is patented and recognized by several renowned international organizations and institutions such as the University of Cambridge. It is also recognized by the National Eczema Association as an innovation that improves the quality of life for people with sensitive skin.

Business Results & Impact

AIZOME ULTRA™ is simple, scalable, and sustainable.

Over 3,000 tons of fabric have been produced, benefitting 2.4 million people. To date, AIZOME has received substantial investments and media attention across the globe.

Partnerships with healthcare institutions, fashion brands, as well as cosmetics producers are underway and will be announced publicly later this year.
