Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
The music video depicts an office worker who, despite feeling resistance, is complicit in bullying due to peer pressure. Gradually becoming a target himself, he is driven into a state of mental strain, which is conveyed through a vivid visual expression. The film acts as a warning to people today who unconsciously consume the misfortune of others as part of digital content. Even though “the foolishness of humans revealed in social media and the manipulation it causes upon people” acts as an underlying theme of the film, we avoided a direct portrayal and instead depicted it in an abstract manner in order to leave enough space for the viewers to reflect on the message.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
Title:
“Naki Jizo”(=Weeping Jizo)
Context:
A “Jizo” is the guardian deity of children and travelers. They can be found in places such as
Buddhist temples, graveyards, and on the side of the road. Most of these statues are carved
out of stone. Rather than being “stone-faced,” Jizos wear a peaceful smile.
Lyrics:
We exist on a pyramid that benefits the very few at the top
What do you think?
I'm not listening
Smile as though you are happy
Push past your limit, one more time
Dear God. Am I not doing enough?
One more time, push past your limit
Am I programmed for hardship and struggle?
Oh, god.
How many last warnings have we had?
I guess we should continue,
to pray.
In desperation without inspiration,
how many times have you bargained for love?
I guess we should continue,
relating to one another?
Rid of all my senses,
I'm a Weeping Jizo
Oh!
The blood that runs through us
are to color these wretched days
The seed of life was torn out of me
I'm at the edge of a cliff
Irreconcilable
I'll remain where I am
Not with a foreign buddha,
but in a familiar hell
Oh, god.
How many last warnings have we had?
I guess we should continue,
to pray.
In desperation, without inspiration,
how many times have you bargained for love?
I guess we should continue,
relating to one another?
Rid of all my senses,
I'm a Weeping Jizo
Even I,
want to dream of laughing
But it seems that's a dream
that will never come true
How many last warnings have we had?
I guess we should continue,
to pray.
In desperation without inspiration,
how many times have you bargained for love?
I guess we should continue,
relating to one another?
Rid of all my senses,
I'm a Weeping Jizo
Tell the jury about the visual effects and summarise any relevant challenges or techniques.
This is the first-ever music video in Japan to incorporate in-camera VFX. A VFX environment created in Unreal Engine was projected on LED panels in real time. We synchronized the movement/lens of the camera with the movement/depth of the VFX space. In the train scene, by placing props such as hanging straps in front of the panels, it made it possible to blend with the VFX background, creating an illusion as if they exist in the same space. For the platform scene, it appears as though the camera is orbiting around the hero and dancers. We achieved this by placing the casts on a rotating platform and simply moving the camera back and forth on a dolly. For the fence sequence, we created a set that utilized real fences, which is difficult to rotoscope in post with green screen.
