Pokémon GO is world’s most downloaded mobile game. It’s played by millions, and yet it only exists within the confines of a tiny phone screen. As Pokémon GO prepared for their first in-person event since lockdown, they wanted to create a new and newsworthy way to experience the game on a scale like never before.
Please outline the innovative elements of the work
We created a 60-ft (18-meter) inflatable sculpture of a Pokémon egg in the middle of a park in downtown Chicago. When night fell we transformed it into the game’s largest battle arena ever. Through 360º generative projection-mapping, the egg hatched to reveal the biggest bosses in the game. Players who came to the location could work together in the app to defeat the Pokémon and watch it get taken down on the egg in real-time. They could also call on friends from around the world to join the battle remotely and view the experience via livestream. At the end of each battle, players could catch the coveted Pokémon to help complete their collection with an exclusive memento of the event. For the first time, fans were able to encounter their favorite characters in a larger-than-life immersive experience that transcended their phones.
