What initially appears to be the latest episode of the well known Japanese cooking show “Three Minute Cooking”, is actually the newest episode from Japan’s largest wireless carrier, NTT to introduce their high speed network LTE. “3-Second Cooking” features a crazy but clever contraption that can cook Chinese dumplings from start to finish in just 3 seconds. The “Super Fried Dumpling Cannon”.

EntrySummary

Dumplings are originally a Chinese dish, beloved in Hong Kong as “dim sum”, so we added the essence of Hong Kong cinema as the key point of the commercial.

The Chinese chef is actually a kung fu master who presses the “launch” button with a back-hand strike.

We parodied the theme song of the famous Hong Kong film Police Story for the music that plays during the high speed camera sequence.

The lyrics in Cantonese say “A dash of salt and pepper, leek and garlic as you like it, shoot right through the dumpling skin and fly on as it wraps around the stuffing, flames burn high, nice catch!”

“3 Second Cooking" mimics the format of the typical Japanese cooking show called “3 Minute Cooking”.

Just when the viewer thinks they’re watching another typical cooking show, the device appears and the commercial gets more and more ludicrous.

Execution

In order to show viewers that the network has become even faster than it was at the time of our last work, the “Shrimp Frying Cannon”, we needed to build an even faster cooking device.

Also, to better explain carrier aggregation, the technology that accelerates the network by bundling two bandwidths together, we built a device that cooks Chinese dumplings. It fires minced meat and Chinese cabbage, the ingredients which compose dumpling stuffing, from separate lanes and combines them into a single dumpling in mid-air. To power up our device from the previous work, we switched to flame cannons that shoot 6m pillars of flame, and shot the commercial outdoors.

In the dumpling skin wrapping sequence, because a deviation of even 1mm would cause the path to curve, we continued adjusting the device until the very moment of shooting. Finally, we modified a catcher’s mitt to have steaming iron plates so that the dumpling could be steamed and grilled after it was caught.

Everything was filmed in-camera with no CGI being used.
