Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

In “A Flammable Planet”, as in real life, a menacing and remorseless fire consumes and destroys everything.

The stop-motion film, used real fire to tell the story of the devastating effects of wildfires on our increasingly flammable planet. We used the naturally destructive properties of fire to create a direct visual metaphor between our increasingly flammable planet and the animated environment.

Background:

WWF asked us to create a film to help raise awareness about catastrophic wildfires, which are increasing in intensity and frequency every year, wreaking havoc on people, nature and climate. WWF needed an emotional, evergreen film that would stand out and call for urgent action to stop the vicious cycle of wildfires and climate change.

Tell the jury about the production design / art direction.

We combined real fire with a flammable set, props, and puppet. We wanted the process of making the film to reflect the issue we were communicating, and have the physical jeopardy of the shoot carry over to the viewer.

The production design/ art direction of the film was entirely guided by the flammable nature of the the set and props and their gradual destruction during the 4 week shoot. To show the uncontrollable and devastating nature of wildfires we wanted the design of the film to directly reflect the issue we were communicating.

The film was shot entirely in-camera. We combined traditional stop-motion techniques together with slow-motion, timelapse, and long-exposure. All the sets, props, and main character were built out of flammable material and progressively burned during production. The final shots of the film were all built by the burnt materials of the previous

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

From the Amazon to the Arctic, wildfires around the world are increasing in frequency and intensity every year, causing severe long-term problems for the health of the planet and people. Climate change and wildfires mutually reinforce each other, and the fires burning today in many parts of the world are bigger, more intense, and last longer than ever before.
