Although it’s very brief, the song captures a nostalgic sense of joy, unique to ice cream truck music. Over the course of only 48 seconds, RZA’s new ice cream truck jingle creates a joyful, mesmerizing melody and responds to systemic racism. He did so without lyrics or sampling. This jingle was entirely original. Taking inspiration from the bells on the very first Good Humor Ice Cream truck 100 years ago, RZA’s composition relied on classic instrumentation that ice cream truck music is famous for, mixed up with some Wu Tang flavor. It begins with captivating, high-pitched chimes that establish RZA’s memorable melody. From there, bass and a drum machine add a contemporary vibe to the track.

It was crafted to seamlessly loop so that it can be easily adopted by actual ice cream truck drivers as they play the song for hours at a time, all summer long.

Please tell us about the cultural insight that inspired the work

In the summer of 2020, as Good Humor looked to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their first ice cream truck, something else dominated culture. That moment in 2020 marked a long-needed racial reckoning in the United States. Amidst all the upheaval, it came to light that the most recognizable ice cream truck jingle, "Turkey in the Straw", had deeply racist roots, going back to 19th-century minstrel shows.

Although Good Humor had zero association with the song, as a leader in the ice cream industry, there was a real responsibility for being part of a solution. The brand wanted to prevent the hurtful jingle from reaching future generations. So, amid calls for change and action, Good Humor released a new sound for a new era. In collaboration with a legendary Black artist, Wu-Tang Clan founder & composer RZA, we created a new jingle to celebrate joy and inclusivity for all communities.
