To draw attention to the music industry’s mental health crisis, we used artificial intelligence to create new songs by members of the 27 Club — a group of legendary artists who died at just 27 years old after battling mental health issues. The Lost Tapes of the 27 Club showcases the music that greats like Hendrix, Winehouse, Morrison, and Cobain could have created, had they gotten the mental health support they needed.

The 27 Club is a cultural phenomenon describing an alarming number of artists who all died at the age of 27 after battling addiction, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues — like Hendrix, Winehouse, Morrison, and Cobain. As a society, we’ve romanticized their deaths. Going so far as to consider their struggles “cool”. And it’s only led to more musicians following the same path. In fact, musicians are twice as likely to commit suicide, and rates of depression among music industry workers is over 70%.

Using Magenta, an artificial intelligence platform developed by Google, we trained a computer to analyze the audio data from four members of the 27 Club — Hendrix, Winehouse, Morrison, and Cobain. Our artificial intelligence platform then used this data to generate all new music — music the 27 Club could have created, had they gotten the mental health support they needed.
