Background

The United Nations Population Fund in Argentina (UNFPA) is the UN agency that works for sexual and reproductive rights and the end of gender violence.

UNFPA exists because violence, discrimination, and lack of acceptance of diversity are issues that unfortunately continue to affect our society. UNFPA's commitment is to help through action and reflection to solve these social problems to build a freer, fairer and more equal world without discrimination or violence.

UNFPA wanted to invite you to reflect on the rights of the LGBTQI+ community in a context in which after the World Cup in Qatar it became clear that there is still a long way to go.

UNFPA wanted to bring this act to reflection, questioning why there are people who have the obligation to declare their gender identity or sexual orientation when we all have the same rights.

Describe the cultural / social / political climate and the significance of the work within this context

The work puts on the table a sensitive issue for the LGBTQI+ community, such as "coming out" and from a completely innovative perspective, not only because of the artistic resource of destroying closets but also because there is always talk of coming out but no one talks about whether this is an attack on the right of people to live their gender identity and sexual orientation freely, without this being a social mandate.

In addition, the campaign celebrates and recognizes the struggle and commitment of 4 of the most important LGBTQI+ leaders in Argentina who dedicated their lives to expand the rights of the community and whose actions are not so well known by society in general.

Describe the creative idea

LGBTQI+ people have the right to live their sexual identity and orientation without discrimination or violence. To generate cultural relevance about these rights we created an art exhibition. It was composed of murals made by Leandro Frizzera with parts of closets that portray and pay homage to LGBTQI+ referents in Argentina: Carlos Jáuregui, Ilse Fuskova, Lohana Berkins and Mocha Celis.

The closets that always had prejudices, through the exhibition, vindicate the struggles and conquests of rights of the LGBTQI+ collective represented in their faces.

The exhibition was taken to places where thousands of people could see them, the main shopping malls in Argentina. People could not only discover these works, but also the history for each mural by scanning a QR and visiting a landing page. They could find a video with the process of "deconstruction" and their transformation into a portrait, along with reflections of the collective.

Describe the strategy

The action was directed to the whole society, without discriminating age, gender, social stratum or demographics, since we are all invited to reflect and feed a conversation as a society that invites us to build a more just and diverse society.

We could have taken the art show to museums or other cultural spaces, but we wanted to reach as many people as possible. This is how the partnership with IRSA, the group that owns the largest and most visited shopping malls in Argentina, came about.

The idea was to turn the exhibition into a popular event that people could come across in their routine, where groups of friends and families could meet to reflect on the rights of a community that still suffers from discrimination and violence.

Describe the execution

The exhibition was made with pieces of different closets by the mural artist Leandro Frizzera. Each work’s size is 2mtsx2mts. and portrays 4 of the most important LGBTQI+ collective referents in Argentina.

A webpage was also created: www.closetsdeconstruidos.com.ar, where you can see a short film with the "deconstruction" process along with the artist’s assembly of them. It highlights the work’s purpose to reflect on the coming out of the closet as a mandate through testimonies of celebrities who tell their personal experience. You can also browse the biography and legacy of each of the portrayed and a photo gallery with details.

The exhibition was implemented in the most important shopping malls in Argentina, among which are: Alto Palermo, Alto Avellaneda, Dot Baires Shopping and Abasto Shopping from February to March 2023 in an itinerant way.

Describe the results / impact

The exhibition "Closets Deconstructed" took place in the 4 most important shopping malls in Argentina, it lasted 1 month and had been visited by +2.85M people (equivalent to +91% of the population of Buenos Aires, the most important city in Argentina). The +47% of the people who visited it, also got into the site to learn more about it.

Closets Deconstrued achieved a reach of +19.5M people.

Its social media campaign had +4.5M impressions and +98% positive sentiment.

It achieved great organic media coverage. Achieving +18.6M online readerships.

Argentine LGBTQI+ celebrities decided to join the campaign by participating with their testimony in the debate about coming out of the closet as mandatory: @francotorchia_ @letisiciliani @mar1908 @costaokis

Its great positive impact on society has taken it to the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires where it was unanimously DECLARED OF CULTURAL INTEREST by legislators of all political spaces.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

Law 27.636 on Promotion of Access to Formal Employment for Travestis, Transexual and Transgender People "Diana Sacayán-Lohana Berkins" was enacted in Argentina almost two years ago. However, only the State has managed to exceed by 300% the hiring of people from the collective. The private sectors and society in general continue without naturalizing diversity and without complying with the quota established by law. Faced with this reality, the United Nations Population Fund saw the need to put on the table and question "coming out" as a mandate. Talking about the issue, generating impact in culturally relevant spaces such as shopping malls, undoubtedly helps to accelerate the construction of a more diverse society where no one must explain anything and can be accepted in all areas without bias, including the workplace.
