Write a short summary of what happens in the film
The ad opens with Satan sitting, bored on his throne in the fiery pits of hell. He gets a notification within the Match dating app and his eyes light up. We next see Satan nervously waiting under a bridge in Central Park, when his match arrives and introduces herself as “2020.” The newly re-recorded “Love Story” by Taylor Swift begins to play.
Satan and 2020 are shown going on in-person dates all over the city. They ironically have a picnic in an empty football field, run on treadmills at the gym, take selfies in front of a dumpster fire, they even steal toilet paper from a public bathroom.
The video ends with the couple looking out onto a cityscape up in flames when Satan says, “I just don’t want this year to end,” and 2020 agrees, “who would?”
Cultural / Context information for the jury
Deep into the pandemic, everyone shared one feeling: 2020 sucked. But optimism was brewing as the year was about to end. The film gave nod to the shared experience of living through a global pandemic through the lens of the two people that could actually find love during a hellish year -- Satan and 2020. From stealing rolls of coveted toilet paper to taking selfies next to a literal dumpster fire, a term that became widespread in the U.S. regarding the year.
The film also included numerous Easter eggs intended to increase engagement in both social and earned media through subtle references to Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Swift, including the number “6” in reference to Taylor’s re-recording of her music, painted on the wall next to a scooter (her feud with Scooter Braun), and an X-men reference, since Ryan Reynolds appears in the franchise.
