Burberry’s 2020 Festive film is evocative of the tumultuous year that we have all had to endure and follows as a group of friends brave the elements and navigate through adversity together; illustrated by large blocks of ice falling from the sky. The viewer is transported from the everyday to the extraordinary, allowing them to explore a new fantasy. It is a celebration of community, creativity and the voices of the future in a unified world. Exploring the freedom to go beyond; the dream-like visuals illustrate the importance of working together and supporting one another throughout these unprecedented times. It highlights how empowering it can be to embrace everyday life, with all its ups and downs and continue to search for positives even when the outlook appears bleak. The film’s spirit of youth breeds hope, freedom and curiosity, with an energy of pure joy and optimism for the future.

Burberry’s 2020 Festive film provided the opportunity to express our brand through actions as well as words. As part of this multifaceted campaign, Burberry has joined forces with charities supporting young people across the world, providing protection, encouragement and empowering them to shape our tomorrow. Burberry’s history of supporting its communities is rooted in the altruism of its founder Thomas Burberry – a former apprentice who established his company aged just 21 and whose fundamental values of contributing back to society continued throughout his life. This campaign represents this long standing importance of supporting communities to Burberry, as the luxury fashion house pledges to support the voices of tomorrow to build a better future. Burberry continues an ethos of empowering our resilient, caring communities that inspire and represent a more inclusive global future.

Explain how the work innovatively used the film medium.

The film portrayed an emotive message of community during a difficult period of time globally. The story reflects the cultural zeitgeist whilst respecting the heritage of the brand. This uplifting film was a tribute to Britain; the birthplace of the brand, focusing firstly on the iconic streets of London and drawing to a close at the expansive British seaside. A reflection on the nuances of life and the ability to take joy in the small things, this is a celebration of togetherness and the joy of being with those you love. The final shot of one of the characters allowing himself to fall backwards into the sea acted as a metaphor for acceptance and embracing the tougher elements in life in order to be able to learn and grow. The expanse of sea is invigorating and awe-inspiring and relates back to Burberry’s ongoing connection to nature and exploration.
