BriefExplanation

MINI JAMBOX is the latest addition to the category leading family of Jawbone Bluetooth speakers. With trailblazing construction, MINI JAMBOX delivers an unequaled size-to-sound ratio. The Original Jambox exposed the world to portable wireless speakers with great commercial success, freeing people to enjoy their entertainment in more places. MINI JAMBOX takes the Jambox heritage and makes it pocketable, while maintaining the same big sound using materials and processes more commonly seen in top-end audio products. Offered in a range of fashion-forward colors, the MINI JAMBOX speaker is a modern accessory that fits seamlessly with your constantly moving life.

ClientBriefOrObjective

With wildly varying prices, quality, and performance, and many copycat designs beginning to crowd the market, Jawbone needed a product to set it apart, demonstrate Jawbone’s expertise, and be a beacon for what’s unique about Jambox speakers. With the MINI initiative, the challenge was to evolve the archetype while staying true to Jawbone's initial DNA. One objective was to make the speaker even smaller, small enough to fit inside a pocket. The design team also wanted to address the durability consumers are looking for in a portable speaker, keeping the minimal approach expected of every Jawbone product without sacrificing design.

Execution

To inform our approach, the team began synthesizing user insight and feedback, while also spearheading efforts to identify key product attributes that customers loved: durability, portability, great sound, compelling finishes and textures, and compact size. Refining the aluminum extrusion into an entirely new construction, flexing a mechanical engineering assembly using fewer parts and steps, and stewarding major leaps in production capabilities at scale resulted in the MINI’s unique exterior shell and internal skeleton, in one fluid gesture. The package is the sound chamber and extrusion, and it ensures MINI has the strength and robustness required in a portable object.

Outcome

The design explorations for MINI Jambox started with a blank sheet and the idea to completely re-invent the wireless speaker as we knew it. On MINI, we are pushing the boundary of rough and fast CNC, typically used to machine mechanical internal details. We flip the use of this usually hidden process, employing it externally to reveal beautiful capabilities for textures and durability. With that, MINI JAMBOX is built on the foundation that life is constantly moving, so you should pick up and bring your sound environment with you. We call it pocketable sound.

Strategy

The user-centered insight for MINI is that people love the small JAMBOX size for its portability and great sound. Like a true lifestyle accessory, they want to bring it along in a small bag with no hesitation about its size or weight. Our intent was to take these core qualities of the original Jambox and push the boundaries even further - to make a great-sounding speaker that is not only portable, but pocketable and beautiful.
