UP24 is a wristband that helps you understand how you sleep, move, and eat, so you can make smarter choices everyday. The band is Jawbone’s second-generation wearable platform and part of an integrated system that includes the UP app, which wirelessly sends data to a user interface. When used together, the band and app provides an effortless way to know yourself and live better. We call it 24 because it provides up-to-the-minute information all day - 24 hours of insights, suggestions, and motivation to reach goals and share your accomplishments.

With the UP platform, an opportunity presented itself to bring greater awareness and guidance to help people understand and improve their habits for better health and well-being. One of Jawbone’s target insights is knowing that people can't seem to gather enough info about themselves. So to deliver, needed to create all-day engagement to give users personal, on-the-spot feedback. The fundamental challenge for UP24 was creating a device that is truly 24/7. The design needed to address human factors and everyday wear, and consider both the physical product experience and lifestyle experience it would deliver day to day.

Execution

Jawbone realized that existing testing standards were too generalized for the product experience envisioned for UP24. After redesigning mechanical and manufacturing processes from the first generation of UP, the design team implemented a new testing standard, which lasted 46 weeks and clocked in over 3 million hours of beta testers wearing mass production versions of UP bands. Most products usually see less than six to eight weeks of small scale field tests in pre-production. Results of this process lead to 28 new manufacturing processes and redesign of all internal components, seals, and wiring. Quite literally, no stone was left unturned.

Outcome

The UP24 band connects wirelessly to your iOS device to provide continuous feedback and instant notifications to help achieve your goals - from micro information to macro insights. The device has garnered widespread acclaim and is at the forefront of the growing “quantified self” movement. The platform is a tremendous market success, as demonstrated by an unparalleled engagement of users with the application. “The UP community has logged more than 500 billion steps and 35 million nights of sleep with UP. It’s an astounding amount of data,” said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone.

Strategy

Our ultimate goal was to make UP24's technology feel less tech-driven and create all-day wearability that expresses personal style and fashion, and transforms data into accurate, actionable insights people can use to change their lives. UP24’s design is dictated by 24-hour wearability and serves as an extension of the user. It's a lifestyle product that integrates with the user, not a tech gadget that stands out. UP24 is not just for the athlete either, or people who want to lose weight - it's for anyone who wants to know more about and improve their lifestyle.
