Lumio is a small, young design company looking to create innovative lighting solutions — solutions that will give people the freedom to experience beautiful lighting wherever they are. We take away the constraints of space and power source. Our product is designed with versatility, accessibility and intuitiveness in mind to meet the demands of modern living. Lumio started as a grassroots campaign with one simple idea and a small budget, and has grown into a consumer product with a global reach.

Design a lighting solution for modern living that meets the following criteria:
1. Adaptable form & function: From the living room to the outdoors, the product should adapt to the user's lighting needs as they evolve throughout the day.
2. Intuitive to use: The user should intuitively know how to use the product without any instruction manual.
3. Superior performance: The product should provide quality, high-output lighting equal to large permanent light fixtures — and last through the night on a single charge.

Execution
Lumio is a deceivingly simple concept with a complex manufacturing process behind it — and the combination of several disparate elements: high-tech electronics, an unconventional use of Tyvek and the handcrafted quality of the laser-cut wood cover. The final product could only be realized through close collaborations between artisans and a sophisticated electronics manufacturer. The result: a modern product integrated into a deeply traditional form, and a new take on how books might illuminate us.
Outcome
Lumio took a familiar form — a book — and created a versatile and mesmerizing light that's endlessly adaptable to the user's needs; the user has far more control than one typically does with a normal lamp. The success and popularity of this first product has made this small studio's brand synonymous with quality and good design. In the process, it's shown how a strong brand can emerge not from a large corporation, but from on-the-ground, crowd-funded momentum.
Strategy
Lumio was born of a desire to give people the freedom to experience beautiful lighting wherever they are: a design unconstrained by space or power source. The goal was to design a product that is not only beautiful and functional, but also connects viscerally with the user.
