BriefExplanation
Ballantine's is the world's second largest Scothc whisky and is sold globally except the the English speaking world (US, UK, etc.) Ballantine's 12 is a premium offering, approximately 15€ more expensive than the standard product. Ballantine's 12's primary benefit Ballantine's 12's target group are well off and 25-35, interested in design, art, culture, travel, etc.
ClientBriefOrObjective
Create a product that dramatizes Ballantine's 12's primary benefit: it's excellent balance, and makes it possible for the consumer to consume Ballantine's 12 exactly the way he wants: with the right amount of water and ice for his own personal preference. The product should be possible to use in bars but also sold in specialty retail, to consumers. Use an interesting designer to make it possible to amplify the PR buzz.
Execution
In the process, we examined the existing consumption rituals, the production process of whisky - which led us to using the materials used in the process: oak, copper, glass, for the product. There's no actual material innovation, but a 100% brand fit.
Outcome
The ice container has a track that makes it fit perfectly on top of the glass; the water container is soldered to the lid of the ice container, and the spoon is has a tiny hole in it, that welcomes the top of the water container. It’s all stable, and the balancing is an illusion. But an illusion that works.
The product is called ”Ballance”, a merger of the brand name and its primary benefit. The parts are made of the materials used in the production of scotch whisky: oak, copper and glass. It dramatizes the brand while consumping it.
Strategy
The aim was to create a stunning piece of high quality, that dramatizes th brand's primary benefit: balance. We wanted to design a product to be used when serving Ballantine’s 12 and they designed a pile of the objects you need to drink whisky: a coaster, a glass, an ice container, a water container and a spoon, that seems to be balancing on top of each other in an almost mystical fashion.
