BriefExplanation

Unmonday Ltd. stands for intelligent audio systems with unconventional design and uncompromising sound quality. They target their products to design-oriented audiophiles. Unmonday brand values include intelligent, unconventional, uncompromising.

The client is a start-up company. They briefed us to design one revolutionary product, the world's first wireless multi-channel speaker. The budget was 1,5 million euros for product, apps and brand development and implementation.

ClientBriefOrObjective

The client wanted a multi-channel speaker that could be used for easy mono or stereo sound and up to full home theater surround sound. The product should be truly wireless, without the hassle of pairing hardware. There were no wireless multi-channel speakers on the market, so the brief was to create one without compromising on sound quality. An intelligent audio system, no less. A revolutionary product which would reinforce the Unmonday brand and give a great kick-start for the their business.

Execution

From a design perspective, we wanted to enforce the quality image of the product by choosing materials that deviated significantly from plastic materials used in low and medium priced speakers. We chose vitro-porcelain for the speaker body because for its sleek looks, but also for its durability and complete transparency for a strong wi-fi connectivity. We added a contrasting texture with a canvas grill. Also the insides were built to last; the software can be updated easily with an app, and the hardware is replaceable, if needed, as it fastens with a simple snap-lock.

Outcome

The Unmonday Model 4.3 is the world's first wireless multi-channel speaker. The user interface is embedded, literally, in the design itself. A built-in motion sensor, more commonly used in smart phones, allows the user to choose one of five audio channels simply by rotating the hexagonal enclosure, and go from single channel mono (one speaker) to stereo, from multi-room use to surround sound (up to five speaker units). The speakers are easily portable from room to room, to fit all your musical movements. An intelligent audio system in itself, the product is an embodiment of the Unmonday brand.

Strategy

The wireless speaker market is dominated by low and medium priced speakers. For a high-end speaker, we thought the target audience should be Apple natives; less price sensitive consumers with a higher brand loyalty. This is why, for the first launch phase, we chose AirPlay technology for wireless streaming. Other platforms will follow in the next phase.

Since the brief was to design a wireless device (no hardware pairing), we took this a step further, and made the product portable by adding a chargeable battery with up to 8 hours of non-stop listening, and designing a leather speaker-case for carrying.
