Overview

BriefExplanation

Bowers & Wilkins is the audio brand behind the reference loudspeakers used in nearly all of the world’s most famous studios, including Abbey Road, BBC, Decca and Skywalker Studios. Five decades of on-going technical innovation has seen Bowers & Wilkins diversify from their origins in high-end loudspeakers into manufacturing award-winning headphones, iconic iPod speaker docks and Wireless Music Systems, as well as being the audio system of choice for premium automotive manufacturers Maserati and BMW.

ClientBriefOrObjective

Bowers & Wilkins have been developing a premium range of headphones for the last four years. After the incredible success of the P5, they wanted to deliver the same level of uncompromising sound and design in a circumaural headphone.

With a standout premium audio experience the P7 caps the product range.

Execution

Big headphones like the P7 can be tiring and uncomfortable to wear. We set out to build the most comfortable headphones on the market. Our extensive ergonomic research helped us understand such things as the subtle regional and ethnic variations in head and ear shape and establish the broadest possible idea of comfort. With rapid prototyping we explored clamping forces and their effect over time, experimented with different open cell foams to create the optimal balance of sound isolation and comfort.

Outcome

Steel, aluminium, leather, care, craft and consideration. The P7 has been put together to last, building on the natural properties of the base materials; steel for its flex and springiness, anodised aluminium for its rigidity and durability, genuine leather for its comfort and natural feel.

With a keen eye on the points of failure and wear, the P7 allows you to replace parts as they reach end of life without having to discard the whole product. It's insight-driven design innovation at its best.

Strategy

Aims for:

Longevity

- Ages well through the use of premium materials like stainless steel and leather.

- Embraces scratches and wear with brushed finishes.

- Uses well established and mature technologies, so product never become obsolete.

Repair and replace

- Cable fatigue often results in premature headphone failure. Solve this problem by integrating user replaceable cables.

- Replaceable ear pads without difficult disassembly.

Considered end of life, in that:

- Existing infrastructures can efficiently separate and reprocess the substantial metal content.

- Packaging made from standard materials that can be recycled in most household recycling bins.
