BriefExplanation
To let people know about Chrome for Mobile and showcase that Chrome can sync across devices, we created a quirky game that starts on desktop and connects to mobile.
Chrome Super Sync Sports lets you sync your mobile to your computer, turning it into a game controller. Think of it as a mini-triathlon for your hands. Use the touchscreen on your mobile to run, cycle and swim with your fingers. Watch your athlete race on your desktop screen, compete on the global leaderboard and invite up to 3 friends sat near you to play with you on a shared screen.
To get started, visit chrome.com/supersyncsports on your computer, pick a game and decide if you’re playing solo or with friends. Next, visit g.co/super in Chrome on your smartphone or tablet and type in the unique code shown on your computer screen. You’ve now ‘super sync’ed’ your mobile device with your computer, and you’re ready to race!
Use the arrow pad on your smartphone or tablet to select one of 50 athletes and prepare yourself for the competition. The motions made by fingers and thumbs on the mobile touchscreen move the athletes on the computer screen. To win and compete for a place on the world leaderboard, the correct gestures need to be made as quickly as possible. At the end of every race you can choose to race again or change sport.
The experience came to life using websockets to allow users to create sessions and sync their mobile devices to the desktop. The same technology is behind the in-game experience, it updates the interface on the desktop based on the accuracy of touch gestures of the user on the mobile phone.
The interface was implemented using Canvas, CSS3 for rich and responsive design across different desktop and mobile phones. WebAudio powers high quality music playback and interactive sound effects.
The project was launched on the Official Google Blog and promoted using Google’s social media channels using a series of playful promotional videos featuring our ‘athletes’ which were housed on Chrome’s YouTube channel. In the following weeks, we ran a digital media campaigns across 7 markets. 6 weeks from launch, +1million visitors to the site, an average duration time of 7mins and over 50% of visitors synced their devices to play.
Super Sync Sports. A super-mobile, super-connected Chrome Experiment!
