BriefExplanation

The piece begins with a young girl, dancer Maddie Ziegler, freeing 48 other young people from a cage while she smears her face in rainbow paint. The dynamic movement accompanied with the song lyrics constructs themes of freedom and overcoming adversity through togetherness. We follow the dancers through a run-down home as they performance in celebration of their newly found freedom. The video ends during a final synchronized dance in which Ziegler and the 48 other dancers fall to the ground as the wall behind them is littered with bullets.

EntrySummary

This music video is an extremely poignant narrative that explores themes of overcoming adversity through togetherness and the acceptance of individual identity. The entirety of the piece is a tribute to the those affected by the 2016 Orlando Night Club Shooting, a tragic hate crime that took the lives of 48 young gay males. The 48 dancers are representative of those who were killed during the attack, while the closing dance back dropped by a wall being filled with holes is representative of the attack itself.
