In a text-savvy culture, South Africans don’t phone their close friends and family anymore .

Texting is the norm and it has basically taken on a language of its own with symbols and emojis. But like most languages things often get lost in translation. Even though emoticons and abbreviations make conversations quick, easy and fun they’re not always as effective because recipients misinterpret the symbols.

Heart eyes, thumbs up, yellow hearts, what does it all mean!?

The idea in each script was to highlight everyday conversations to show our audience how confusing texting can be, especially when it comes to emojis and how easily they get misinterpreted. Things get lost in “textlation”, so avoid the confusion and awkward moments all together by simply making a phone call.

VO: It all started with some emojis from Stacy to BFF Michelle. She’s asking Michelle to be maid of honour at her wedding.

(Ping sound)

VO: Stacey sends: couple emoji, kissy face, single girl, question mark?

VO: Michelle’s stunned at this invitation for a threesome. She never picked Grant and Stacy for that type of couple. She replies: Shocked face, question mark.

VO: Ah, she’s delighted! Bridal and dress shopping’s now on the agenda. Stacy texts back: Friends holding hands, underwear emoji. Clappy hands.

VO: Dressing up thinks Michelle, oh well Grant’s quite cute. She replies: Blushy face, those two girls in bunny outfits.

VO: Ah Michelle’s already planning the bachelorette! Stacey replies: Double thankyou hands.

VO: And so while Stacy plans to go bridal shopping, Michelle’s packing light for a saucy sleepover at Grant and Stacey’s.
