BriefExplanation

“Barely Legal Pawn” is a comedic, branded online video featuring TV stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul (formerly of the hit TV show “Breaking Bad”) as seedy pawn shop owners Buzz Jackson and Randy Jackson. The story features TV star Julia Louis-Dreyfus who, playing herself, drives to the pawn shop to sell her “Seinfeld” Emmy to help her pay for an island she mistakenly purchased after a night of too much rosé.

EntrySummary

Fans around the country were devastated when the popular TV show "Breaking Bad" went off the air. Media stories were everywhere, citing fan disappointment, despair and longing for a reunion. Screenings of the final episode made national headlines.

When "Barely Legal Pawn" was conceptualized, the goal was to reignite fan interest in the two famous TV characters played by actors Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. The decision to also feature famed actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus was strategic; she and actor Bryan Cranston once worked together on her legacy TV show "Seinfeld" and once shared an on-air kiss. In addition to having millions of fans, all three actors were nominated for 2014 Emmy Awards.

Execution

To get people to watch and share, the video needed the perfect combination of: 1) Talent – People with the right personality and chemistry, and a built-in, loyal fan base that would be likely to share; 2) Storyline – Great content entertains and sucks the viewer in; the right story would drive people to action; 3) Pop culture relevancy – The combination of the right talent plus a timely news hook would create buzz.

"Barely Legal Pawn" reunited Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, a dynamic duo fans have longed to see since the conclusion of the “Breaking Bad” TV show, along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, whose hit TV show “Veep” also has a loyal following. In addition to millions of fans and followers, all three actors were nominated for 2014 Emmy Awards, giving the video an added news hook. Through humor, hidden references and dialogue written to engage and excite loyal fans, we allowed viewers to connect emotionally with the content. For fans, the video was a giant inside joke that they couldn't help but watch and share.
